Vice President’s Staff Meeting Minutes

Agenda Items:

Summer schedule: Peter Dorman. Peter said that some faculty had issues with the summer schedule. He said that Lorenz felt like there was too big of a gap between the 2 5-week sessions. Peter also said that there was concern about starting on a Thursday because it shorted the MTW classes by a day. Michael said that he wasn’t too happy with the schedule and will be looking it over for the future.

Changes in personnel: Muriel Mickles. Muriel said that Cindy Wallin is the new interim SME dean. Also, she said that Betty Jo Smith has decided to retire at the end of the month and she will be looking for her replacement.

New Programs: Muriel Mickles. The new Energy Technology program will start this fall. Muriel asked Jim to tell everyone about the new cybersecurity certificate and cybersecurity fundamentals certificate. He explained that the cybersecurity certificate has been certified, is currently being taught at NOVA and is for students who have some kind of background in cybersecurity or computer science. The cybersecurity fundamentals certificate is for students that are right out of high school or who do not have computer science experience.

Other: Muriel Mickles. OER Grant – Muriel said that we got a $15,000 grant that we satisfied and met the obligations of. She said that Juville applied for an Achieving the Dream grant for OER and we got it, along with $67,000 to continue our OER work. Another initiative we are going to be a part of is the Dual Enrollment HS Pell Grant Experiment. This will give DE HS students in Early College and STEM the opportunity to apply for the PELL Grant, based on their FAFSA. Michael will be holding a workshop in the next week or so for students, their parents, counselors, career coaches, etc. to find out more information about the experiment.

Protocol for curriculum changes: Muriel Mickles. Muriel said that Kris has to come up with a draft of a protocol for curriculum changes. She handed out a draft of that protocol to the deans to read over and asked that they get together with Kris to finalize it.
