Ms. Mary Zoccola, President of the Classified Staff Association, opened the meeting by welcoming all who were attending and by introducing the guest speakers, Dr. John Capps and Dr. Muriel Mickles.

Members had previously sent questions to Mary Zoccola for Dr. Capps and Dr. Mickles to discuss. Both Dr. Capps and Dr. Mickles began by thanking the Classified Staff for all they did to transfer face-to-face instruction and move all college communication to online and in a smooth manner for students, staff, and faculty.

There was discussion on the budget and Dr. Capps simply said, “I don’t know” and “there are a lot of what ifs.” He discussed the Cares Act Funding Act, retirements, eliminating discretionary spending, and trying to mitigate any serious effects on the college community.

There is a wide variation across the system for enrollment for the summer semester. CVCC falls in the middle. The system average is -3.31%.

There was much discussion on whether classes would be face-to-face in the fall. Dr. Capps answered that all of this was still unknown due to what would take place with the Corona virus. Students enrolled in hands-on programs would only come to campus in small groups and even then, everything depends on the restrictions at the time with the Corona virus. He stated that he would not do anything to jeopardize the safety of students and employees.

The Chancelor has created a “Beyond the Pandemic Task Force” and CVCC’s Dr. Cynthia Deutch is serving on the task force.

In the future, Dr. Mickles foresees that all faculty will be required to use Canvas and include the gradebook, syllabus, and announcements. CVCC must be proactive and prepared.

Dr. Capps ended the discussion by asking if there was anything that CVCC was not doing that we should be doing. If so, please email him with suggestions.

Mary Zoccola explained that the Classified Staff was looking for new officers.  If anyone was interested, please contact her. She thanked everyone for participating in the meeting. If you would like a link to the Zoom meeting, please contact Mary.

The meeting ended at 3 p.m.
