CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION POLICY COMMITTEE
October 15, 2012

Present: Will Sandidge, Dr. Mickles, Ruth Hendrick, Ernie Wade, Larry Scott, Margie Jones, Charles Poff, Dr. Laub, Joe Csaky
Ernie Wade called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. He asked every member to go around and introduce themselves. He said that we have two proposals to look over today.

Ernie passed around the proposed changes to the Culinary Arts and Management AAS degree and the Culinary Arts certificate on behalf of Dr. Lemons since he could not be present.

The first proposal was the curriculum change to the Culinary Arts Certificate. The proposal is to delete BUS 117 (Leadership Development) and add HRI 140 (Fundamentals of Quality for the Hospitality Industry). Ernie motioned to approve it, Ruth Hendrick seconded it and all were in favor of this change.
The second proposal was the curriculum change to the Culinary Arts and Management AAS degree. It is the same proposal as the certificate (delete BUS 117 and add HRI 140). Dr. Laub questioned the Social Science electives. He said that he thought the requirement was 6 hours and 3 hours was all that was listed on this program. Dr. Mickles brought in the VCCS policy and it states that the requirement is only 3 hours for Social Science electives. Ruth moved to accept the change. Dr. Laub seconded it and all were in favor of this change.

Jeff passed around a proposal for a new degree program - AAS in Computer and Electronics Technology - Computer Networking. The collaboration with Harris Corporation was discussed due to the need for electronics technicians that understand networking. This degree plan will include elements from the technical studies in computer networking along with basic electronics courses that are needed for employees at Harris. Dr. Mickles moved to approve it, Ernie seconded it and all were in favor of this new program.

Ernie brought up an issue regarding this committee’s approval of non-credit courses. Everyone agreed that non-credit courses are not required for this committee’s approval.
The next meeting will be the first week of December at 3:30 p.m., location TBD.
Ernie adjourned the meeting at 4:03 p.m.
