December 10, 2014
The Curriculum and Instruction Policy Committee met on December 10, 2014, at 3:30 p.m. in the President’s Conference Room. In attendance were Jim Atkinson, Ava Connelly, Michael Farris, Kimberly French, Jeff Laub, Jim Lemons, Brent Lester, Muriel Mickles, Kris Ogden, Charles Poff, and Will Sandidge. Absent were Lynn Dillard, Cynthia Lofaso, and Ruth Hendrick.
Brent Lester called the meeting to order. The minutes from the October 15, 2015, meeting were distributed. Muriel Mickles made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Charles Poff seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.
Welding Technology Certificate
The Welding Technology Certificate has been designed as an add-on to the existing Welding Career Studies Certificate to enable students to obtain a higher skill with the addition of the Math and English courses, along with advanced flux core for pipe welding. It was recommended that a footnote be added for ENG 100 stating that ENG 111 College Composition I may be substituted. The courses in the Welding Career Studies Certificate are contained in this certificate program, which will meet the Chancellor’s mission for stackable credentials. Will distributed a chart which detailed the Program Review and Approval process. Upon approval by the Local Board, the Welding Technology Certificate will be submitted to the VCCS for review and notification sent to SACS. Kris indicated that this would not be a substantive change. It was recommended that the justification include “increased knowledge in welding” or “needs of employers.” Ava made a motion to approve the certificate with the recommended changes. Muriel seconded the motion. The committee approved the certificate with recommended changes.
Jeff Laub explained that the courses in the proposed career studies certificates in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Fundamentals, Machine Technology Fundamentals, and Welding Fundamentals are currently offered to dual enrolled high school students who are taking senior level technical courses. These courses are also open to the general public. The students would earn a certificate from CVCC and encourage them to return to take courses in the higher-level programs. This would meet the Chancellor’s mission for stackable credentials. The classes in these programs are included in the higher-level certificate or diploma. It was recommended that “dual enrolled” be deleted since the program is not restricted to dual enrolled students. The three programs will be published in the college catalog upon approval. There was discussion about financial aid eligibility. The committee recommended that a statement be entered in the catalog for all programs that do not qualify for financial aid. Will asked Mike to draft the statement to include in the catalog. Jim made a motion to include this statement in the catalog for programs that do not qualify for financial aid. Muriel seconded the motion. The motion was approved to include the financial aid statement in the catalog.
Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Fundamentals Career Studies Certificate
The Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Fundamentals Career Studies Certificate program is designed to give students a stackable credential in heating, ventilation and air condition and to obtain skills necessary for a basic entry-level installer or services assistant. Kim made a motion to approve the career studies certificate with the recommended changes. Jim seconded the motion. The committee approved the career studies certificate with recommended changes.
Machine Technology Fundamentals Career Studies Certificate
The Machine Technology Fundamentals Career Studies Certificate program is designed to give students a stackable credential in machine technology and to obtain skills necessary for a basic entry-level machinist. Muriel made a motion to approve the career studies certificate with recommended changes. Charles seconded the motion. The committee approved the career studies certificate with recommended changes.

Mechatronics Career Studies Certificate
The Mechatronics Career Studies Certificate program represents the second year of study for the STEM Academy students in the Mechatronic option. This is a stackable credential to the Engineering Fundamentals Career Studies Certificate, pending approval by the Local Board. The Engineering Fundamentals program was approved by the Curriculum and Instruction Policy Committee in June and will be presented to the Local Board for approval in January. A statement will be placed in the catalog that this program is for STEM students only. Muriel made a motion to approve the career studies certificate with recommended changes. Ernie seconded the motion. The committee approve the career studies certificate with recommended changes.
Capstone Quality Course Proposal
This proposed course has been offered as MAC 195 in the Machine Tool and Quality Diploma program. It is a capstone course that develops the skills needed by inspectors and includes the application of inspection tools and gauges commonly found in inspection. Charles Poff made a motion to approve the course proposal with recommended changes. Muriel seconded the motion. The committee approved the proposal with recommended changes.
Basic Hand and Power Tools for the Nuclear Industry Course Proposal
Central Virginia Community College has been working with AREVA, a local nuclear service provider, to train technicians. Members of the advisory committee for the Nuclear Technology Associate of Applied Science Degree program proposed two courses in the program so that the students know how to use the tools of the trade. This proposed course will emphasize the development of the knowledge and skills needed when servicing nuclear reactor components using hand and power tools. Jim made a motion to approve the course proposal with recommended changes. Muriel seconded the motion. The committee approved the proposal with recommended changes.
Introduction to Nuclear Technology Course Proposal
This course was also designed in cooperation with the advisory committee for the Nuclear Technology Associate of Applied Science Degree program to give technicians the knowledge of nuclear reactor theory, components, and operations necessary to service nuclear power plants. Muriel made a motion to approve the course proposal with recommended changes. Ernie seconded the motion. The committee approved the course proposal with recommended changes.
Law Enforcement Career Studies Certificate Update
Jim Lemons gave an update on the status of the Law Enforcement Career Studies Certificate. The certificate has not been submitted to SCHEV as a substantive change. Therefore, the proposed program cannot be submitted to the Local Board for approval. Jim discussed the proposed agreement that has been developed between the Criminal Justice Academy and CVCC and the progress in obtaining necessary equipment.
Charles Poff agreed to review the revisions. Jeff will revise the proposals and forward them to Charles by Friday.
