Meeting Minutes from the November 6, 2018 meeting:
Jim Tuite asked if anyone had any changes to the meeting minutes from November 6, 2018. Jim Lemons made the motion to approve the minutes, and Elizabeth Narehood seconded the motion. Everyone agreed to the minutes.

Proposed Changes to CVCC General Education Assessment Policy from the General Education Outcomes Task Force from James Tuite.

Jim Tuite stated that a General Education Outcomes Task Force, comprised of all department heads, was established in August 2018. He handed out the current VCCS draft policy changes and replayed Kevin Riley’s video of the new SCHEV General Education Assessment Policy, which was shown during fall 2018 Convocation. Kris Ogden handed out the proposed revised criteria for assessing each of the proposed learning outcomes (core competencies) and a draft of a curriculum map for the committee to review. She also stated the policy allows each college to establish the criteria to assess the outcomes. The proposal, if approved by the Evaluation and Assessment Committee, will be brought before the College Governance Council on February 5, 2019, and if approved, be submitted to the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) on April 1, 2019.

After looking over the curriculum map, attached to the common outcome assessment criteria, Cynthia Lofaso asked Kris Ogden if the information on the curriculum map was from the previous map. Kris Ogden said, unless Tom Sparhawk received updated information, it was the previous information. Kris Ogden said the curriculum map was only a draft and that it included only high enrollment classes. However, she believes all classes should be mapped. Cynthia Lofaso pointed out that PSY 200 is not on the curriculum map. Cynthia Lofaso also asked if she would be required to provide supporting documentation. Kris Ogden stated that Cynthia Lofaso’s classes might be a great example to assist in drafting learning outcome assessments since Cynthia teaches regular, hybrid, web and dual-enrolled classes. Kris Ogden said that common learning outcomes should be assessed using a grading rubric. Cindy Wallin added that all mapping for high enrollment courses should be completed before April 1, 2019.
Once these common outcome assessment criteria changes are approved, the policy will take effect in Fall 2019.

The next meeting of the CVCC General Education Outcomes Task Force is on February 15, 2019.

Jim Tuite asked if anyone had any other questions or announcements for the committee. Kris Ogden stated that their office was working on writing the fifth-year report for SACSCOC.

Jim Tuite asked if there was any new business. There was none.

Our next meeting is February 19, 2019. Jim Tuite reported that he should have information to share from the General Education Outcomes Task Force and the College Governance Council meetings at our next meeting.

Vic Sizemore made the motion the meeting be adjourned, and Elizabeth Narehood seconded the motion. All were in favor, and the meeting was adjourned at 1:25 p.m.
