Strategic Plan Updates and Input from Dr. Cynthia Deutsch

Cynthia announced she had presented the strategic plan to the local board at the last board meeting. She reported it was well received and asked for more input. She did not receive much except it looked good and they appreciated all the equity chronicles and data she had presented to help drive the discussion of the plan. She also stated she had presented the information to the constituency groups; so there has been a lot of communication throughout the semester. There is one area she feels like is missing and that would be the communication with students. She is not sure how much involvement there has been with the students in the past, but she would like to work on getting more students involved. There have been some students that have volunteered to work with her, so a committee has been put together. They have not met yet and once they decide how to move forward, they can start working with the plan. She stated she had not received strong feedback from the survey on the plan she had sent out to the entire college. She had only received about 10 responses.

Cynthia announced the departmental assessments had now been linked with the strategic plan in the planning software. The academic assessments had not been linked yet. Drew Stafford worked with that process and his last day was Friday. She is in the process of trying to fill his position. The position closes on Friday, so hopefully we can get someone on board to help with this process. She stated if you are involved with departmental assessments and have issues with the new model to please reach out to her. She asked if there were any questions, comments, or feedback. Ernie Wade asked if she knew of any major challenges we may have that need to be identified. She said at this time there were no simple answers. She believed what was sent out through the equity chronicles identifies some challenges but at this time there are no easy answers. He asked if she thought the general interest of people entering higher education or the supply of faculty members being lower across that nation would be an issue. She has no data on that topic and believes it is just a difficult time in society today.

Xavier Retnam asked Cynthia how to get to the planning software and she will meet with him to set him up with the software. She announced if any other members had any problems with the new model to please reach out to her.

QEP Topic Committee from Dr. Cynthia Deustch

Cynthia announced the short survey that had been sent out. At this time all she wants are ideas. Any ideas related to student success. She would just like our opinions. It could be something we are not doing or improvements on things we are already doing. She has gotten some responses but could use a lot more. This is the beginning of our reaffirmation of 2024, and a big part of the reaffirmation is the QEP. We need to demonstrate a broad-based involvement. She will send out another reminder today. She has also provided information and examples of what QEP is and since she was directly involved with the last QEP as co-director and selection of the topic, she will be able to provide great information and examples. She could use our help in spreading the word to please complete the survey. She suggested if everyone just asked or reminded the person in the next office about the survey, that may help. She will need to include students but not at this time. We will pick two or three topics and then make the decision on the best topic.

Cynthia stated that she has heard a lot of ideas on student advising or faculty advising. She would like to hear any other ideas related to student success. She asked if there were any other questions or ideas on the topic and how to get this survey completed. David McGee suggested you need to knock doors. Elizabeth stated this was a busy time of year and Cynthia understands everyone is busy; but she also understands how everyone cares about this college. The survey will close next week, and she will be sending out one more reminder before it closes.

Cynthia announced she would be attending a 4-hour workshop on QEP at the annual SACSCOC meeting in December. After attending the workshop, we should be off to a good start with getting this process underway.
Cynthia had a quick announcement for the committee. She announced we would be participating with CCSSE (Community College Survey of Student Engagement) this year. The survey is done around every three or four years, and we have signed up to participate this year.
