Professional Development Team Meeting
Attendance:  David McGee, Paul Forrest, Deborah Bauer, Francie Dye, Tim Wilhelm, Cynthia Lofaso, Jane Pearson, Peter Dorman
Paul Forrest presented the group with a first draft of the Central Virginia Community College Professional Development Policy & Handbook for review for additions and corrections. On page two, the dates were changed from January 1 to December 31 for faculty evaluation cycle. The cycle for classified staff is correct as stated.

There was considerable discussion on page three, as to what should be included or changed for Professional Development Goals. It was finally decided that Career development would be dropped as the first two goals covered that area. In addition, it was decided that Career Development and Organizational development would be added to the Classified Staff items. It was also agreed that Organizational development was taking classes or training to help benefit the organization versus taking classes for teaching a subject. For instance, taking a leadership class would be organizational development.

On page 4, Professional Development Policy Committee, it was debated at some length whether or not to put the percentage distribution of funds in the handbook. It was finally decided that we would not put anything into the manual that was subject to yearly change. Not that the distribution would change, but this way the committee each year can set the amounts without having to change the policy.
In the membership Table it was stated the number for CVCC representative(s) to the VCCS Professional Development Committee would be changed from 2 to 1 or 2.

On page 5, the first sentence would be changed by taking the information in the parenthesis and changing it to admin faculty. The next sentence would be changed to full time classified staff. The first sentence in the last paragraph before Professional Development Activities would be changed to Mach 1 of the academic year (before After March 1).
Underneath Professional Development Activities the last sentence would change from “budget would include (but not …)” to “budget would include the following (but not…)”.

On page 6, the current tuition rate for the college being used for this year would be added to the policy under Tuition Reimbursement.
In the line “Additionally, all faculty member may also enroll” will be changed to include all classified (fulltime and part time) employees and that the total credits are not to exceed 12 units from July 1 to June 30.
The last discussion item was to include some information about the funds for professional development are part of the assessment review done by the department the faculty is under.
