Called Social Events Committee Meeting  (Thursday, October 6, 2016)

Meeting Held on Thursday, October 6, 2016 in the Culinary Arts Dining Area at 1 pm.
Present:  Layia Perry, Michel Mavinga, Kitty Daniel, Gayle Kiger, Dominick Launi, John Lofaso, Tim Wilhelm

The meeting was opened by Dominick Launi to present an idea to the committee for a Social Event for the Students on the last day of class this semester in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of CVCC in the Student Center.  The idea could be part of an engagement strategy with the students from the Social Events Committee.  The Culinary Arts program would not be involved in the food preparation and service but would involve faculty and staff to assist with this event.  The committee was receptive to the idea taking into consideration the money the committee has budgeted this year and to the mission of the Social Events Committee.  This event could perhaps be in lieu of the Holiday Social.  Dominick agreed to contact Dr. Capps for his thoughts on this idea before pursuing any planning for this event.  If not feasible this year, this idea could be pursued at another time.

Old business:  None

New business:  The goal of this meeting was to brainstorm ideas for a theme and menu for the Holiday Social Event this year.  I am happy to report that a wonderful idea was presented by Dominick Launi.

The Theme is based on a New York City Holiday in which there would be a Metropolitan Theme to this year’s event.  Several Themes were presented:  “A Metropolitan Holiday”, “A Metropolitan Magical Holiday”, “Metropolitan Magic” or “Metro Magic”.  Other suggestions to fine tune the wording of this theme are still open and welcome.

The Menu:  Based on the eclectic areas of New York City, have food stations that represent some of these famous areas.

Station 1:  New York Deli Theme:   with Deli Style Sandwiches like Grilled Reubens and Chicken Noodle Soup and Salad Bar.

Station 2:  China Town Theme:  with Oriental dishes.

Station 3:  Little Italy Theme:  with Italian dishes and Minestrone Soup

Station 4:  Greek Festival Theme:  with Greek dishes.

Dominick agreed to build a menu based on the Metropolitan Theme and present it to the committee at the next meeting.

Decorations:  Can be based on New York City.  Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, etc.  Oriental Trading was suggested as a place to look for New York City themed decorations.

Photo Booth:  Can have a skyline of New York City in the background for pictures.  Perhaps party props that you might see in New York City on a New Year’s Eve celebration.

The Event Date and Time:
o   The date for the 2016 Holiday Social is Thursday December 15, 2016 in Merritt Hall Multipurpose Room from 11:15 am – 1:30 pm
o   The set up and decoration for the event date is Wednesday December 14, 2016 at 1 pm.
o   The date was given to Dianne Sykes and Dr. Capps to make sure they were available to attend on the above date.  It is a good date for both.
